Decorating Design Ideas Lawn and Garden Simple Projects

2 Minute Christmas Project: Alternative Outdoor Decor

I am generally the sister blogging about gardening. This gets a little tougher in the wintertime, due to all the garden inhibiting white stuff.  But there are some great outdoor decorating projects to do while crossing your fingers that the new bulbs you planted will come up in the spring.

Outdoor Christmas decorations tend to be focused on Christmas lights, but there are other fun ideas for outdoor holiday decor. My favorite thing to do is to decorate some of the trees in my yard with ball ornaments. This is easy since there are so many plastic ornaments (safer for kids) on the market. (All the big stores have these stockpiled for some reason, or maybe they just don’t get purchased as often because you can sort of tell that they are plastic.)

The point is these are basically indestructible ornaments and you can purchase them for a relatively low price. Last year I bought some of the after Christmas clearance ornaments, this really makes the project affordable.

Like most decorating projects, there are no real rules, but I do have some tips:

1. It is generally better to go for larger ornaments so that they can actually be seen on your trees. (You can buy big outdoor ornaments from places like Home Depot, but I find that they are pricey. Walmart, Target and Kmart or other discount stores will generally have big plastic ornaments designed for inside trees on sale for a lot less money. As long as they are plastic, they will work outside.)

2. This is also the place where you can experiment with those  outrageous colors (like hot pink and electric blue) that you can’t quite coordinate with your interior holiday decor. These work great outside because they are easier to see.

3. Keep it simple. The best thing about this project is that you don’t have to try to find an extension cord or an available electrical outlet to get it done.

Happy Holidays!
